Benfica Ultras Leader found Dead Outside Estádio da Luz

The leader of the Benfica ultras group “Diabos Vermelhos”, Sérgio Caetano, was found dead last night. Sergio Caetano was found with a single gunshot wound to the head in his own car, parked within the vicinity of Benfica’s home stadium, Estádio da Luz. A gun believed to be the murder weapon was also found in the car.

Caetano had been reported missing on Friday afternoon after dropping his son off at school earlier that morning. Whilst the Portuguese police continue to investigate the incident, there are further reports that another leading figure in the ultras group is also missing.

The club have since released the following statement:

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica deeply regrets the passing of Sérgio Caetano, an indispensable figure in the Benfica universe and leader of the Diabos Vermelhos.

His unwavering dedication to the Club will leave an indelible mark on the history of support for Benfica, in the most diverse stadiums and pavilions, in Portugal and abroad.

Sport Lisboa e Benfica extends its deepest condolences to the family of Sérgio Caetano, his friends, and the Diabos Vermelhos during this time of profound sorrow.”

The Underground will provide updates as more information comes to light.
